The name originated courtesy of the Church Bell ringers in Europe a long time ago.
To build their strength to ring the massive chapel bells, Ringers would take spare bells home to do reps with. - So they wouldn't disturb those around them (and also go deaf) they removed the clapper rendering them silent (or dumb)
