Questions & Answers #3

Q: I really want to improve my flexibility. Is there a way to do this beyond just stretching after a workout?

A. Well, stretching is the key to improving flexibility, but keep in mind that there are many different ways to stretch. There's static stretching, which employs the traditional stationary stretches you're probably familiar with. Then there's dynamic stretching, which is stretching combined with movement. Pilates is a good example of dynamic stretching. And believe it or not, resistance training takes your muscles through a full range of motion — including stretching them. The "eccentric" part of a contraction, such as the lowering of a dumbbell on a biceps curl, lengthens and stretches the muscle.

You actually should stretch during and after a workout, and not necessarily before. ALWAYS make sure that you are warmed up before stretching or strengthening your muscles. This will allow a greater range of motion and help prevent injuries.
